Applied Social Studies Top-up Year BA(Hons)

What it’s about

This is a one year, full-time programme (or longer for part-time students) for students who already have an HND in Social Care, Diploma in Social Work, Diploma in Counselling, Diploma in Youth and Community Work or comparable qualification.

What you do

There are compulsory modules in research methods and social policy together with a dissertation. In addition, five option modules must be studied from women’s studies, studies in death and dying, bereavement, working with HIV/AIDS, children’s rights, mediation, divorce and separation, religious belief and social care, counselling, housing, antiracist and multicultural social welfare. There is a wide range of teaching methods using lectures, seminars, tutorials and independent study. Methods of assessment include essays, seminar presentations, examinations and dissertation.

Where next

The degree will provide a useful qualification for those wishing to work in a wide variety of statutory, voluntary and private settings dealing with health and social welfare services. The degree will also provide a foundation for vocationally oriented postgraduate study in person centred and helping occupations or research in health, social policy and social welfare.

Careers and Further Study

Careers in almost any field are open to geographers. Our graduates have been appointed to posts in administration, finance, management, the armed forces, computing, industry, international aid, development and environmental agencies, and education. Almost all of our graduates are in employment within a few months of graduating, or progress to postgraduate study. The typical level of employment at the census, six months after graduation, is 96%.
Selection

Conditional offers are made following UCAS applications. Those offered a place are invited to attend one of our Departmental Open Days. We welcome applications from mature students.

Students with qualifications other than A Levels seeking admission will be considered on an individual basis, and may be invited for interview.

Undergraduate Study

All 13 departments in the Faculty offer degrees at undergraduate level and provide teaching of the highest quality, with consistently excellent rankings. Our undergraduate students study broadly-based and specialised degrees in 25 subject areas within the Faculty, as well as various combinations with other subjects drawn from across the University. Our unique degree structure enables students to undertake studies in up to three subject areas in the first year, before specialising at Part II.

Institute for Advanced Studies Research and Enterprise

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) at least 85% of research activity in most of the Faculty’s Departments was classed of an ’international standard’.

We are also committed to transferring our knowledge and skills to support social, economic and cultural organisations and stakeholders in the North-West and beyond.

Central to the promotion of our interdisciplinary approach is the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS), a joint venture with the Lancaster University Management School.
