Anthropology, Geography, & Earth Science

Home STUDENTS, FACULTY & STAFF Colleges and Schools College of Arts and Sciences Anthropology, Geography, & Earth Science

The AGES Department combines linked academic disciplines which unite the human and physical world. The Earth Science component of the department is primarily concerned with the physical world. The associated academic disciplines of Geology and Environmental Geoscience cover this realm. Anthropology and Geography combine human relationships with the physical world; how the physical world plays a role in the development and proliferation of culture and how humans impact the physical world. Additionally, geographic techniques important to understanding the world around us, such as Geographic Information Systems, and Remote Sensing, are included within the Geography discipline. A holistic understanding of the integrated Earth system is thereby gained through the combination of disciplines housed within the department.

Recent attention has focused on human impacts on the physical world. As human populations continue to grow exponentially, such realities become increasingly important. Conversely, population pressures place a strong burden on physical impacts on the human world. Such impacts include natural disasters, climate change, evolving landscapes, agriculture, water resources, transportation, and socio-economic change. All aspects of the human/physical condition are explored through the associated Departmental disciplines.

Due to these and other associated factors, employment opportunities are unprecedented in the disciplines housed in the AGES Department. Undergraduate degree programs and minor programs are detailed through the departmental links.
