The Gerontology program prepares graduates for positions in agencies and institutions which administer health and community-based services for the aged, Career opportunities exist in nursing homes, hospitals, senior centers, area agencies on aging, nutrition programs, rehabilitation centers, social welfare agencies and other programs. The Gerontology certificate also enhances the knowledge and skills of individuals currently involved in the provisions of services. A certificate in Gerontology requires 15 credits.

A history major is a wonderful course of study, both as an interesting way to spend your years at Coe and as strong preparation for the world beyond. History is a classic liberal arts major, which means you will learn skills that will help you in work and life, regardless of the particular field you enter. And, seriously, that is a great gift, for the pace of change in society and the economy is so fast that knowing how to read, to write, to speak, and to learn new things will only become more crucial in the future.

History students, in particular, develop the ability to gather information via research, to interpret information and arguments, to think critically and analyze skillfully, and to communicate their findings in writing and in person. These abilities prove valuable in many ways and in many walks of life.

In particular, a history major is strong preparation for students interested in:
Teaching, whether in kindergarten, at a high school, or back at a place like Coe College.
Working for the government, whether local, state, federal, or in foreign service.
Working with people, in fields like social work, non-profit work, community development and the ministry.
Working with communication, in fields like journalism, public relations, publishing, and advertising.
Going to law school.
Going on to graduate study in history.
Going on to other graduate studies or fields, such as library science, museum studies, historical preservation, public history, classical studies, and anthropology/archeology.

African American Studies plays a key role in the college’s efforts to provide students opportunities to build good foundations of understanding and coping in our complex world and growing multicultural society

About the discipline

Become a culture interpreter with a major in social studies offered through the Department of History/Economics/Geography/Politics. It draws on multiple disciplines to provide a deep understanding of people in an individual and corporate context. The major leverages history, economics, sociology, geography and psychology to provide a rigorously informed perspective into a very complicated world. Learning the language of culture requires students to become savvy speakers of the social sciences. The field of social studies has as its purpose the study of humans as individuals and as part of the social order. Society’s problems are multi-dimensional and have roots far in the past. The aim of the social studies group major is to give the student a well-rounded outlook on life beyond one’s own area of specialty.

Social science graduates find positions in a wide variety of career settings, including government, marketing, management and high school teaching. For students who plan to continue in graduate study after receiving their bachelor’s degrees, social science is a good preparatory curriculum for graduate professional programs in law, social work, public administration, librarianship, counseling, and business.

This degree aims to enable students with the ability to locate pivotal points of anthropological and comparative change within the contemporary social world. It will enable students to develop the academic, technical, computing and practical anthropological skills necessary to apply them to modern social issues. Additionally, it will encourage a self-reflective evaluation of diverse cultures and communities. The degree provides students with the opportunity to apply and combine anthropological study with approaches and issues from other disciplines.

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits. If you take a Joint you study each subject for 60 credits at each level.

The combination of core and elective modules allows you to specialise in the area which suits your passion. The transferable skills you learn can be applied to roles in all areas in the public and private sector and you can progress onto postgraduate courses either here or at other universities.
