General Studies
GENERAL STUDIES OR PROFESSIONAL STUDIES
The Professional Studies program. was created to provide for nontraditional students who have previous college credits in career/technically oriented programs to earn a bachelor’s degree through additional studies.
Professional course credits completed in prior study can be combined with additional credits and will qualify for the bachelor’s degree. Individual programs of study are designed by the student with the assistance of the program director.

Apply for Admission
The City Colleges do not require students to take an admittance test. However, students are required to take a placement test to assess their English, reading and mathematics levels. Students who hold a bachelor’s degree or have successfully completed a college level English or mathematics course with a grade of ‘C’ or better may be eligible to have the placement test requirement waived.
Take Placement Tests
Placement tests are required for all new students. Meet with an Advisor to determine which placement tests you should take. Transfer students should forward an official copy of their transcripts to the Registrar’s Office prior to enrollment.

General Studies Programs
The Associate in General Studies degree is an attractive alternative for students to explore a range of subject areas without concentrating on any particular one or who are undecided about future educational or career goals. The program requires successful completion of a total of 60 semester hours of general education and elective courses with a cumulative grade point average of AC@ (2.00), in addition to the student having satisfied the Constitution requirement. The AGS is neither a transfer nor a career entry degree. While other colleges may accept credit earned toward this degree, no articulation agreements guaranteeing that the student will enter a Bachelor’s Degree program with junior standing has been established.

Social science graduates find positions in a wide variety of career settings, including government, marketing, management and high school teaching. For students who plan to continue in graduate study after receiving their bachelor’s degrees, social science is a good preparatory curriculum for graduate professional programs in law, social work, public administration, librarianship, counseling, and business.
