Welcome to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences
As the largest Faculty at Lancaster University, we bring together 13 departments and associated research centres in a diverse staff and student community of 4200 undergraduates and 875 postgraduates.

Undergraduate Study
All 13 departments in the Faculty offer degrees at undergraduate level and provide teaching of the highest quality, with consistently excellent rankings. Our undergraduate students study broadly-based and specialised degrees in 25 subject areas within the Faculty, as well as various combinations with other subjects drawn from across the University. Our unique degree structure enables students to undertake studies in up to three subject areas in the first year, before specialising at Part II.

As a leading centre for interdisciplinary arts, humanities and social science research, we have a wide range of masters schemes and PhD programmes, a thriving graduate community and an extensive postgraduate research training programme is described in detail on the Graduate School website.
Institute for Advanced Studies Research and Enterprise
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) at least 85% of research activity in most of the Faculty’s Departments was classed of an ’international standard’.
We are also committed to transferring our knowledge and skills to support social, economic and cultural organisations and stakeholders in the North-West and beyond.
Central to the promotion of our interdisciplinary approach is the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS), a joint venture with the Lancaster University Management School.
