Career Opportunities
The knowledge of a foreign language a valuable resource in today’s world. Coe foreign language graduates have gone on to language-related careers in government, museum work, international banking, teaching, advertising, radio and television, library work, and the diplomatic. Here are a few examples of what Coe foreign language graduates are doing now:
Tracey Peters (Spanish, minor in French) teaches French and Spanish at a high school in California
Paul Venhuizen (French and Physics) is working toward a Ph. D. in French at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
Raquel R. Brandhorst (Spanish and Business) is currently employed as a Marketing Representative by Aegon Insurance. While at Coe, she did a business honors project related to the Hispanic community in West Liberty, Iowa.
Lisa Exey Hoppe (German, Literature, and English) is raising a family in Bonn, Germany, where whe works as an editor and translator for the German Research Council.
Lorraine Martorelli (Spanish) earned a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Indiana University. Currently works at the University of Chicago’s Center for International Studies as an Educational Outreach Coordinator.
Jill Thompson (French and Art) is currently working as the Registrar at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.
Amanda Moore (Spanish, English and Creative Writing) is working in the Social Work Training Division of Casa Central in Chicago.
Trina Koppang works for German-owned Canton Audio in Minneapolis.
Tom Wagner (French) is a French teacher in the Omaha Public School System.
Jennifer Engelkemier is curator of the German immigrant collections at the Museum of Amana History.
Chiraz Boutiba (International Relations and Spanish) is a member of the Gulf War Compensation Commission of the United Nations in Geneva Switzerland.
Derek Daniel lives in Berlin where he is completing a graduate degree in Computer Science.
Mike Noonan (Spanish) is a Physical Therapist in Tucson, Arizona, an area with a large Hispanic population.
Paul Wilson (French and Business Administration) works for the Merril Lynch Investment Company.
Andrea Purvis (Spanish and English) works with Hispanics in the area of social services
Grace Yabrudy (French and Business) is a staff Officer for the World Bank. She is currently in Mali.

Career options will be available to students who may use African American Studies as a primary interest or as a base on which to build related careers. African American Studies plays a key role in the college's efforts to provide students opportunities to build good foundations of understanding and coping in our complex world and growing multicultural society
Student Opportunities
As an African American Studies student at Coe, you will benefit from a strong liberal arts curriculum that broadens your intellectual horizions and provides sound preparation for a successful career in your desired field.
Students may focus more pointedly on specific areas in literature or history or sociology or on special research topics.
Independent-study and off-campus-study opportunities may be woven into students' concentration plans.
Students may come to obtain more appreciation of diversity in human experiences by examining and studying selected cultural elements of the diasporic African world.
Foreign Languages
Have you thought about working as a journalist covering the separatist movement in French-speaking Quebec? As a translator for an archeological team researching Mayan ruins in Mexico? As an environmental chemist helping clean up industrial sites in the new Eastern states of Germany? The study of foreign languages at Coe College can make such dreams real, and it can do more. When you study Japanese, German, Spanish, Latin or Greek at Coe, you become culturally literate in the language, poetry, music, food, geography, painting and customs of another people and are then better able to understand your own place

Foreign Language Scholarships
A strong background in a foreign language could earn you a language scholarship. Students who have received a Trustee, Presidential or Dean's merit scholarship will be invited to attend Scholarship Weekend and compete for a competitive scholarship in French, German or Spanish. These scholarships are sizable and are renewable for four years. If you are interested in more information, please contact the Office of Admission.
Career Opportunities
Your History Major Beyond Coe
A history major is a wonderful course of study, both as an interesting way to spend your years at Coe and as strong preparation for the world beyond. History is a classic liberal arts major, which means you will learn skills that will help you in work and life, regardless of the particular field you enter. And, seriously, that is a great gift, for the pace of change in society and the economy is so fast that knowing how to read, to write, to speak, and to learn new things will only become more crucial
